How could one sort through all the inspirations out there and pick their ultimate choice of décor?

Hashantha: Décor is given birth by a person’s or a group of people’s imagination. So, when a person sorts through all the inspirations and ideas, they could look for what is closest to their initial imagination and then work through it to achieve a better version. This would be the easiest way to pick the perfect décor.

Shehara: Every bride has her own ideas when it comes to floral décor. I think one should gather all the inspirations (styles and colour), and then decide what will fit the venue chosen. The florist can help you arrive at this decision. It is Important that your choice fits the venue.

Muditha: It is important to consider the following factors when you finalise on your ultimate choice of décor.

Affordability

Availability of seasonal flowers

Availability of time to set up the décor at the venue

Ambience of the wedding venue

Space available/structure of the hall/location

Capability and past performance of the décor provider

What elements will make the biggest impact on ambience?

Hashantha: I would say that the elements that would make the biggest impact on ambience would be the colors a person picks and how each color compliments the other. Remember, the idea of the design will have a huge impact on this.

Shehara: I think in order to create a mystical ambience, candlelight is a must. However, the lighting must be controlled to fit the situation. This will complement the décor whilst creating the correct ambience.

Muditha: I would say floral décor is very important. This is because, it would create a unique ambience. Apart from this, every other little detail is essential as well and this includes the colour combination, table layout and lighting arrangements.

Where should one focus their budget on when it comes to their wedding décor?

Hashantha: When it comes to the wedding décor, a person should mainly focus on their table centers as most of the invitees stay put at the tables for the longest time period. This will give them a chance to admire the table décor more. A wedding’s focal point could also be a settee back or a head table, as they act as a photo back drop for their pictures.

Shehara: First the bouquets, and then the table décor.

Muditha: I would say it is definitely every little thing about the décor. Uniqueness of the décor is important. The look of your wedding totally depends on the choice and level of the décors. Décors are as important as food for the wedding. Therefore, allocating a substantial budget on décors would not make you regret when you hear the feedback. The perception of your guests depends on the ambience of the function.

How would you describe the importance of flora and fauna for weddings? What do you think they symbolise?

Hashantha: Flora is what makes any event beautiful, not just weddings. People experience the abundance of flora at one place, making it one of the most beautiful sights. In my opinion, there are two things a guest would remember about a function and that would be the food and the décor. Thus, we can see that décor plays a major role in any event. And their symbolism of love, joyfulness and positive vibes only add more beauty to the whole concept.

Shehara: When you see that flowers have bloomed in your garden it fills you with a feeling that you are witnessing something so magical. You experience the same feeling when you see floral and foliage at a wedding. Blooms symbolise happiness and this meaning complements the whole occasion as your wedding is one of the most important days of your life.

Muditha: Different flowers and colours represent many different things. Having a theme for all the elements of a wedding is important. Using fresh flowers, although it’s costly, makes the ambience better with its natural look and alluring fragrance. Using fresh flowers will symbolise your social class and taste.

Please enlighten us on the various creative ways of how a bride could incorporate flowers to her wedding. What do you think will be a game-changing idea?

Hashantha: Any couple who have started to plan their big day would have an idea of what they want, while they also would have gathered inspiration through various sources and other events. I, as a designer, would make sure to understand their requirements and transform it into a unique design which will not be a repeat from the past events. The client’s initial requirement must be kept in mind and turning this into a real-life dream by blending in western and traditional concepts of Sri Lanka would be a game-changing idea in my view.

Shehara: Everybody has their own creative way of using flowers for their weddings and functions. All those creative ways are game changers in their own eyes. We, florists, are here to help bring your dreams to life accordingly.

Muditha: Flowers can be combined with all the elements of a wedding from the invitations to the giveaway gift. It’s all about creativeness which makes your wedding unique. Choosing a right floral décor partner who can incorporate all the elements into a unique wedding is the game-changer.

Have you ever created décors without blooms?

Hashantha: Yes we have, and it all depends on the wedding themes like Moroccan or Arabic, where we work a lot with different colour draping, lamps, lighting and more abstract designs.

Shehara: Yes, once I designed a wedding with carved Ice. It was quite a challenge as we had to think of the ice-melting process. Getting the water to set clear so that the ice could be transparent was just a stressful task.

Muditha: We have done decors without flowers previously. Once, we had done a setup full of candles, fairy lights and foliage. However, we believe that flowers make a wedding seem more natural and attractive.

What was the most innovative creation you have introduced to the wedding market?

Hashantha: As I mentioned earlier, I think we have been able to bring in a touch of western designs to our traditional concept weddings. Blending these together, by far, would be the most innovative creation I have introduced.

Shehara: When I started 10 years ago, most people did formal flower arrangements such as center pieces. I did my third wedding with all jam jars and bottles. Of course, I found the inspiration through pictures and felt confident enough due to my client’s trust on me.

Muditha: Every new décor of ours are innovative. We haven’t repeated the same design. We want our clients to demand a design that we haven’t done before. During the last two and a half years, we have made lots of couples happy through our innovative creations. I think the best is yet to come.

What’s your say on the changing trends of wedding décor?

Hashantha: We live in a very dynamic world. Thanks to technology, new ideas are born every minute or day, and people get the privilege to be inspired instantly. Therefore, I think change is always welcome. Since we are a company that mainly focuses on designer weddings, new concepts and ideas are accepted with open arms and it will be our passion to do so.

Shehara: I think it's a good thing. We have to be in line with the rest of the world. We are a popular country for destination weddings. So, we really have to be in line with the changing trends and be able to execute it as well.

Muditha: Changing trends is good. That’s what keeps the industry alive and the one with the most innovative creativity thrives in the industry. We love that challenge.

What are the current trends for wedding décor?

Hashantha: Well, one of the current trends I see in the market is that clients love to work with lighting aspects along with the floral. They also would like to add a touch of the ancient times along with their ideas. This helps us to be extremely creative and be open to newer ideas.

Shehara: Current trends for wedding décor is very much tropical flowers and foliage I would say. Using geometric shapes with tropical foliage is a trend that most people desire.

Muditha: Nowadays, most couples prefer to have natural flowers, especially, different and rare floral options. They believe this would make the event unique and more natural-looking with lots of foliage.

How can a couple incorporate their personality, style and taste to their wedding décor?

Hashantha: It is important for us as a florist to recognise and understand the client’s language, then we evaluate their needs and expectations, their personalities, their likes and dislikes during our face to face meetings. We would work on our designs based on their initial ideas and they are always welcome to give their opinion at any time during the design process until the outcome will be approved by the couple.

Shehara: I think before the florists starts designing, the couple must help them out by selecting ideas that they like. This is an initial process of homework that a couple has to do before they meet the florist. It may be flowers and foliage or any other element, and we florists will have to be creative to create the wedding to their personalities.

Muditha: The way you want your wedding to look portrays your personality. We are here to make your dream wedding come true in front of your eyes. A right décor partner will always listen to you first and improve the design with their expertise knowledge on the subject.
